Story
Follow Rupert Campbell-Black and Tony Badingham as their long-running rivalry comes to an end. The same filming location was also used to depict Trenwith House in the 2015 BBC television adaptation of Poldark.
This adaptation (one ep in) seems fine
So obvs read the book eons ago (it was like a coming of age rite of passage in a certain time and place) and TBH remembered very little. strange title aside (because some of Gillia’s creations were very hot – Rupert Campbell Black says it all – and it’s entered the lexicon a little bit), but almost immediately I started, if I don’t remember the plot wholesale, having a synaptic moment with a stunning YSL opium scent while watching The Rivals .

It giggles silly instead of laughing out loud, and cheekily instead of poignantly. It quickly built a world – the 80s, greedy Thatcherite old boys and yuppies, bored wives and fearful warrior women treated like meat no matter what they did, harmony, cigars and birdsong, English class strata, a globalizing UK in the world.
and the socio-political commentary, while not shoved in your face, is much clearer than reading books
Maybe because I’m older and I’ve met more people, Cooper’s criticism of British culture is more obvious, but I think it’s also the casting, the accents, the costumes – the way each character is drawn. s habitus (quoting Bordeaux) and presenting it to an audience for examination, admiration, denigration and/or praise.
Ok, it’s a bit panty, panty panto, but FFS why not?!
