Although this Canadian film had a much wider release in Canada than a typical Canadian film, its distributor, Elevation Pictures, for some reason decided not to release it. marketing budget. As a result, the film did poorly at the box office and was pulled from most theaters in or after its third week. I’ll fully admit that over the past few years I haven’t kept up with current movie releases as my knowledge has mostly been from my ad hoc streaming services. I hadn’t heard anything about this movie until I saw it on Showtime a few nights ago, and I pretty much knew the same about everyone involved. I also rarely write notes on IMDB, but in this case I’m pulling it in light of its undeservedly mediocre overall score, skewed by a review that seems ridiculous in every way. That is, to the movie itself. As others have noted, the acting and production values can be uneven, but what a story! There’s more than a little Schindler’s List going on here, but it’s even more special because the main character has nothing but a privileged position. Others have summarized the plot well; I’m not going to do that here, but as fascinating as this is as a yarn, even more so is the moral complexity and humanity of all the characters, even the Germans, and his cock-eyed vision. filmmaker that, while not the primary villains here, the Soviets have to answer almost as much as the Nazis for their actions during this period of lying about the "Good Fight" misnomer (as are many other things unrelated to this film, such as Japanese-American internment, the bombing of civilians in Germany and Japan, indifference to the plight of European Jews, etc., etc.). I’m often moved by a great movie, but I have to admit that I get a little more than teary-eyed when I watch the real-life characters’ stories unfold in the final cast (don’t miss this one!). For me, this comes in somewhere between an 8 and a 9, but doubting the awesomeness of the story and the need to increase the overall score is a plus. I notice that although this film is not Polish, it is set there and makes two of the best films of the last years and “Forgotten Love”. Highly recommended.
