Rating: 76 Overall, a pretty good psychological thriller, well presented and showing the effects of jealousy on family dynamics/relationships, all thanks to Daisy Ridley’s good acting and a well-executed climax
(2024).
Pretty good directing (macro directing is good because the director does a good job of portraying the conflict and instilling the horror/thriller roots throughout the film; micro directing is pretty good to good because the interpersonal scenes are where you really see the family dynamics and relationships between the characters; storytelling is good because you really care about what happens next as they slowly resolve the conflict; tension is built well because it keeps the audience engaged (especially towards the end)), pretty good acting (good from Daisy Ridley (really shows a full range of emotions and a lot of charisma in the lead role), pretty good from Shazad Latif (acts well with Ridley but is a bit too direct as the villain (still pretty good though)), decent from Matilda Lutz (shows some distance from the main two but does well enough), decent to fair from the rest of the cast (everyone plays their roles well but it’s really about the main three characters)), story is pretty good to good (the concept is quite interesting because it ties the concepts of horror around family dynamics and relationships; the plot structure is well laid out; the flow between sequences is good; the characterization is quite good because you can really get a sense of who Daisy Ridley is, but the rest is a bit too obvious), pretty good writing (the dialogue is pretty good (a few amateur lines); the symbolism is decently prevalent because the film centers around family dynamics while also dealing with the topic of mental illness; the foreshadowing is very good because it is a key element of the storytelling), pretty good music (helped set the tone), pretty good cinematography (a lot of well-executed shots that create tension and build the isolation of the world (especially in the case of reflection)), decent editing, pretty good sound (helped set the tension), the pacing is good because the film seemed to have a good pace, the climax is well-executed because it shows what they were trying to build throughout the film, the tone is very similar to other psychological thrillers, I saw the world premiere at SXSW
