Story
In Mexico, a lawyer gets an unexpected offer to help a feared cartel boss retire from his job and disappear forever by becoming the woman he’s always dreamed of. IMDb editor Arno Kazarian offers sneak peeks of 12 films he screened at the 2024 New York Film Festival, including Anora and the dangerous, oddly erotic Misericordia.. The French title card misspells an Indian city written as "Dehli".. Shown in Latin Slant: La Bamba Remake, Tarantino has a BIG mouth, SPICE Jenna & Selena shocks! (2024). My second favorite film from Cannes after "The Substance" (I didn’t watch "Anora).
It’s pure madness
A musical about drug dealers and corruption in Mexico??? WTF???"Emilia Perez" he’s really inventive. It combines many different genres: drama, comedy, musical, thriller, but it does so in a very good and entertaining way. It is also extremely original and also surprisingly emotional. Here is a character who has a moving and heartbreaking journey through the film. I won’t go into details. It’s not really a spoiler because it’s revealed in the first 15-20 minutes of the movie, but I didn’t know about it and was shocked that this movie went in that direction.
Gascon plays the titular role
So we advise you not to read the description and watch it completely blind if you want to have the best possible experience. The best thing about this "Emilie Perez" are definitely performance. She won the award for best actress in Cannes for as many as 4 performances (Karla Sofia Gascon, Zoe Saldana, Selena Gomez, Adriana Paz). Saldana plays the main character and has a lot of intense and swaggering scenes (especially the musical ones). I am happy that after all these blockbusters, she finally got a role where she can show her acting skills. It’s a bit of a supporting role, but she’s the heart of the film and the whole plot revolves around her. Gomez and Paz were good, but I’m surprised they also won the Palme d’Or – their performances weren’t as great and memorable as Saldana’s and Gascon’s.
I love cinematography and music
Jacques Audiard’s vision is bold and impressive. This movie is modern and looks beautiful. It doesn’t all work perfectly and there were a few moments where I wasn’t completely sold, but most of the time I enjoyed it and was in awe of its craziness, ingenuity and originality. I’m not a big fan of musicals, but the musical scenes (of which there aren’t many) in that movie are stunning and very well choreographed & footage that makes them enjoyable to watch. The songs are catchy and memorable (my favorites are about vaginoplasty and the taste of Coke)."Emilia Perez" it’s not for everyone. Some people walked out, some said it was one of the worst films at the festival, some people liked it (including me). The general public will not like this.
Let’s support weird and niche cinema
The closest movie I’ve seen to this is "Annette" by Leos Carax. "Emilia Perez" it’s more of a crowd pleaser, but will still be lacking with a lot of people. But I encourage you to see it anyway.
